2012 News

At the 'Steam Gathering' this year, we were pleased to welcome Tilly Walker the author of the 'Fred the Steeplejack Series' who was on hand to sign copies of her latest book, 'Fred's Summer Holiday'. Tilly's writing style is beautiful and the illustration by Caroline Whiteside are delightful. A book for children it may be, but adults will enjoy reading it with their children as it appeals to both boys and girls. A proportion of the sale price is donated to a charity for the establishment of apprenticeships in traditional engineering (or as Fred Dibnah would say, 'Back Street Mechanicing').

Signed copies of the book are available at KSE and to purchase through our online shop. Tilly will also be on hand at our Santa Event on Saturday 8th December to read her new book 'Christmas at Little Tinkering'.

We have now launched our online shop which enables payment by cheque and Paypal. It is still under development, so does not have the full product range available yet. Delivery costs will be calculated at checkout on the website, but if you want to collect your goods in person, this charge will be waived and it will be a good chance for you to visit KSE and see the progress since 2010. Please note: Kirkby Stephen East Station site is open from 10 am - 4pm at weekends.

The second reprint of Keith Richardson's excellent book, 'Kirkby Stephen East - a Station Remembered' is now available - details of how to order a copy are given below, but it can also be ordered through the online shop website.

We have increased the range of stock in the shop this year in preparation for the Stainmore 150 Event. We are now  stockists for Bachmann OO gauge and Graham Farish N gauge range. Examples of the current model railway stock is shown on our online shop pages.

The latest products in stock include an increased range of Cumbria / Lake District related titles from Countryside Books and steam / diesel DVD's from Transport Video Publishing. We are now suppliers for Gibson's Puzzles and stock a wide range of high quality jigsaws.

If you cannot get to the shop, but are looking for gifts, please consider using the links below for a range of online presents or, alternatively, see our fundraising page.

To mark the opening of our new Retail Outlet, the Rev. Alan Cliff, author of the award winning 'Jack the Station Cat' books, undertook a book signing session for us at KSE on Saturday 22nd November 2008 (10.30 - 12.30). 'Jack' himself was also present and a record number of 'Jack' books were sold during the session. Further details about 'Jack' and his friends can be found on their website.

At the end of this page, there is an album of photographs showing the work undertaken on the new shop. This has been made possible by a grant from Cumbria County Council's 'Community Regeneration Fund' and a lot of hard work by our volunteers and Contractors.

If you would like to purchase our book 'Kirkby Stephen East - A Station Remembered' by Keith Richardson as reviewed by the 'Northern Echo' and 'Heritage Railway', please send a cheque for £11.50 (which includes P & P) made payable to 'Stainmore Railway Company Ltd.' to: SRC Secretary, 1 West End, Sedgefield, Stockton on Tees, TS21 2BW or visit our online shop.

'Rabbit' the cat has been immortalised in the 'Jack the Station Cat' book by the Rev. Alan Cliff where she stars as Miss Rabbit, Head of the Kirkby Stephen East Station Cat Choir in 'Jack the Station Cat and the Midnight Mice'. We stock a range of 'Jack the Station Cat' merchandise and his books. The book is available from our shop for just £2-95. If you would like to learn more about 'Jack the Station Cat', please visit his website.
